The demanding ground
The bridge abutments encountered highly fractured mudstone, with core loss reported at up to 40%. At the second abutment, piles needed to extend up to 4 m deeper than designed.
How The Heavies responded
The Mait HR75 installed 800 mm diameter pile casings to rock-socket depth. Specialist on-site welding extended the reinforcement cages to suit the deeper piles, which were drilled and tremie poured.
The result and checks
The Heavies’ published project account reports that the deeper second-abutment piles were completed with minimal additional time. It also reports independent pile integrity testing confirming that the completed piles were structurally sound.
